We’re excited to introduce you to Elizabeth Staples… the dynamic founder of The Good Dog Spot and a trailblazer in redefining pet-care in the Pioneer Valley. After a stint in the corporate world at MassMutual, Elizabeth realized her true passion lay with animals, and in 2007 she launched her dream: a facility where dogs wouldn’t just spend the day, they’d thrive.
From the early days of treating canines like cherished family members rather than warehouse-boarded pets, Elizabeth built a business rooted in compassion and enrichment. In the years since, she hasn’t slowed down: under her leadership The Good Dog Spot grew from one location serving a few hundred dog-daycare clients to two thriving sites and a team of nearly 40 staff, all delivering elevated day-care, grooming, boarding and enrichment programs.
At the heart of her work is a clear mission and philosophy: to give pet parents peace of mind through consistent, compassionate care in a nurturing, safe and fun environment where pets can socialize and grow.
To underscore her commitment to excellence, Elizabeth recently took her professional education to the next level by earning the Certified Professional Animal Care Operator (CPACO) credential — demonstrating her dedication to rigorous standards and pet-safety leadership
With her blend of business savvy, heartfelt care and a sprinkle of fun, Elizabeth Staples is setting a new bar for what pet care should look like. YPS was excited to ask her to share her thoughts for our blog about how to approach a career in this industry.
BUILDING A CAREER IN THE PET CARE INDUSTRY
If you love animals and have ever dreamed about turning that passion into a profession, you’re not alone – and you’re not without options.
The pet care industry is booming. From grooming and training to day and overnight care, this space has grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry that shows no signs of slowing down. More than ever, it needs smart, driven, compassionate professionals.
Why the Pet Industry?
Besides the obvious perks (puppies!), working in the pet space is deeply rewarding. You get to make a difference in the lives of pets and their people. For young professionals seeking meaningful work, the pet care industry offers diverse opportunities, flexible career paths, and the ability to specialize or scale up depending on your goals.
Where To Start?
There’s no one-size-fits-all path, but here are some ways to get started:
Experience First
Hands-on experience is everything. Consider:
- Volunteering at a local shelter
- Working at a vet clinic, pet care facility or grooming salon
- Assisting a dog trainer or pet sitter
These early roles build not just skill, but credibility. They also help you figure out what areas you truly enjoy; for example working hands on with dogs, customer service, training, marketing, or operations.
Get Certified
Credentials matter in this industry, especially as it becomes more professionalized. Consider certifications such as:
- Pet First Aid/CPR – Basic but essential.
- Fear Free Certification – Focuses on reducing fear, anxiety, and stress in pets.
- Professional Grooming Certification – Offered through organizations like Animal Behavior College and the National Dog Groomer Association of America,
- Professional Dog Trainer Certification – Offered through organizations like Animal Behavior College or the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDC)
- Pet Boarding & Daycare Certifications or memberships – the Professional Animal Care Certification Council (PACCC) and the International Boarding & Pet Services Association (IBPSA) are 2 of my favorites.
You don’t need them all, but choosing a few aligned with your goals shows commitment and builds trust with employers and clients.
Build Your Soft Skills
Yes, you’ll need to understand animals in a variety of ways, but you’ll also need to talk to the other end of the leash. After all, it’s the people who pay the bills and they have expectations and needs that sometimes run far deeper than just providing a safe place for their companion. Clear communication, empathy, time management, and teamwork are crucial skills in any pet business role.
Think Like an Entrepreneur
Even if you don’t want to open your own grooming salon or dog daycare (yet), having a business mindset helps. Learn about customer service, scheduling software, budgeting, and marketing. Employers value team members who think beyond the kennel.
Network
Join professional associations like:
- The International Boarding & Pet Services Association (IBPSA)
- Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT)
Also, I recommend that you follow pet professionals on social media, attend petcare expos or conferences, and don’t be afraid to reach out for an informational interview. Many facility owners are happy to share what they’ve learned.
The Takeaway
The pet industry offers more than just a job, it offers a calling. It’s fast-paced, emotionally fulfilling, and constantly evolving. Whether you’re interested in animal behavior, have an artistic flair for grooming and styling, are passionate about pet health and wellness, or simply love animals and are more drawn towards technology, or even HR or marketing, within a pet care business, there’s a place for you.
Start with curiosity, gain experience, pursue the right certifications, and surround yourself with a community of passionate professionals. A meaningful career doesn’t always come in the usual form… sometimes it comes covered in fur!
