Summer in Western Mass is full of fun and adventure, but it also brings serious risks for our four-legged friends. From rising temperatures to booming fireworks, there are plenty of seasonal hazards to keep in mind. At The Good Dog Spot, your dog’s health and happiness come first (always!). Here are some important summer safety tips to help your pup stay cool, comfortable, and safe all season long.

Never Leave Dogs in Hot Cars

This is one of the most dangerous mistakes a pet owner can make. Even with the windows cracked, the inside of a parked car can heat up fast. For example, on a 70-degree day, the temperature inside a car can reach over 100 degrees in just minutes. Dogs are at high risk of heatstroke in these conditions, which can be fatal. The best practice? If your dog can’t come inside with you, the best option is to leave them at home (or plan for them to come visit us for a Daycare Day).

Keep Your Dog Hydrated

Access to fresh, cool water is essential whether your dog is lounging indoors or playing outside. Remember also always carry a portable water bowl when you’re out for a walk or heading to the beach or park. Signs of dehydration in dogs include excessive panting, dry or sticky gums, and sluggishness. Don’t wait until your dog seems thirsty – offer water regularly throughout the day.

Avoid Heatstroke and Hot Pavement

To minimize heat-related risks, walk your dog early in the morning or after sunset when temperatures are cooler. Hot pavement can burn your dog’s paw pads. A good test… if you can’t hold the back of your hand on the ground for more than a few seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s feet. Be alert for symptoms of heatstroke, including heavy panting, drooling, vomiting, trouble walking, or sudden collapse. If you notice any of these signs, get your dog to a cool, shaded area and contact your vet immediately.

Be Fireworks-Wise

Fireworks are a staple of summer celebrations, but they can be terrifying for dogs (no, seriously, many dogs despise them). The best way to keep them safe is to keep them indoors in a quiet, secure space. Consider using white noise machines or anxiety wraps to help calm nervous pups. Vet-recommended calming products can also make a big difference. And remember, if your dog is especially sensitive to loud noises, The Good Dog Spot offers overnight stays where they can feel safe and cared for during the commotion. Finally, double-check your dog’s ID tags and microchip info are current in case they panic and escape (always better safe than sorry.).

Make the Outdoors Safe

If your pup spends time outdoors, make sure they have a shaded, cool area to rest in. Limit strenuous play and hikes during the hottest parts of the day. Dogs often push through discomfort to keep up, so it’s our job (their human) to monitor for signs of overheating like excessive panting or restlessness.

Protect Against Pests

Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes are more active in summer, and they love to latch onto our pets. Check your dog daily, especially after walks in tall grass or wooded areas. Don’t forget to inspect hard-to-see spots like ears, armpits, paws, and under the tail. Keep your environment clean by washing bedding often, vacuuming frequently, and trimming your lawn. Also, talk to your vet about the right preventative products for your dog.

Support Their Immune Health

A strong immune system can help your dog bounce back from bug bites or minor infections. Feeding a balanced, high-quality diet is a great foundation. You can also ask your vet about supplements like omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, or vitamins that may offer extra support.

At The Good Dog Spot, we’re here to help keep your pup healthy, happy, and safe no matter the season. Whether you’re dropping in for grooming, daycare, or overnight stays, you can count on us to treat your dog like family. Stay safe this summer and give your dog the care they deserve – one tail wag at a time.
