Did you know that while all dogs need to exercise to burn off energy and prevent poor behavior, not all breeds require lots of space to do it?
Most dog owners understand that their pet needs to be able to expend energy in a productive and safe environment. Perhaps because of this, you might assume that you need to be a homeowner or have access to lots of outdoor space. But what if you live in an apartment? Are there dog breeds that are content, safe, and even enjoy life in a smaller space?
The answer is yes! Below find some popular breeds that are good choices for apartment living, along with some other benefits of each breed. *
BASSETT HOUND
Bassett hounds are especially good options for families with young kids. They generally have lower energy levels and can tolerate being on their own well enough but do have a tendency to howl at times.
BICHON FRISE
If you or anyone in your family has allergies, Bichon Frise are a popular breed choice because they do not shed as much as others. They are playful and great for apartment dwellers, but it’s best not to leave them alone for long periods of time, as they are prone to separation anxiety.
BULLDOG
Despite the Bulldog’s fierce look, they are sweet and affectionate dogs. They generally are lower energy than most other breeds, so they are well suited to indoor play if need be. Be cautious during hot weather, as they do not tolerate heat well.
CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL
This adorable breed is perfect for novice dog owners who enjoy lots of companionship with their furry friends. Like Bichon Frise, they do not like being alone, but they are wonderful family dogs and are very playful.
COCKER SPANIEL
Made famous by Walt Disney’s animated film Lady And The Tramp, the Cocker Spaniel is affectionate, gentle and playful. Not only are Cocker Spaniel’s a great choice if you have children or other pets, keep in mind that they do have a tendency to bark when nervous or afraid.
DACHSHUND
There’s a reason Hundley was a dachshund in Curious George – they are excellent apartment dwellers! Dachshunds are very loyal to their owner, intelligent, and especially playful at home.
Some cautions to consider with this breed is that they like to bark and can be wary of strangers, making socialization a priority.
MALTESE
Maltese are affectionate and lively breeds. They are smaller in stature and gentle and greatly enjoy being with their owners. They do require a significant amount of attention and may not be the best choice for families with young children.
PUG
Looking for a dog who loves to be with you? Pugs are incredibly social and playful. They were bred to be lap dogs, so they are naturally very affectionate. However, they also do not like being alone for long periods of time and can shed a fair amount.
