Helping Your Dog Thrive During the Summer Months

Now that June is here, the summer season is almost in full swing! While the temperatures continue to rise and routines shift for the summer season, we’re here to remind you of how important it is to adjust your dog’s schedule as well. Hot pavement, high humidity, and midday heat can make regular walks and activities more difficult for dogs, but if you adjust their schedule slightly, it can help them thrive throughout the summer season. 

A Few Suggestions to Help Your Pup Thrive 

• Adjust your pup’s walking schedule: Head out for a walk in the early mornings or evenings when temperatures are cooler and more comfortable outdoors. Giving them lighter activity during peak heat will make a huge difference.  
• Avoid walking on hot pavement: Remember, sidewalks and asphalt can quickly burn sensitive paw pads during the summer months. If you can avoid these areas for the sake of your pup’s paws, they’ll thank you!
• Increase hydration: Dogs dehydrate faster in warmer weather. We recommend keeping multiple water bowls around the house for easy access, and bringing portable water bottles on walks.
• Allow for more rest throughout the day: Dogs often naturally slow down in the summer months. Heat can cause fatigue faster, napping is more common, and indoor enrichment can replace physical activity.
• Regularly brush your pup: Keep in mind maintenance for your pup’s coat. If you can incorporate regular brushings, it can improve air flow. You can also rub paw balm to protect their paw pads. 
• Provide shady areas for relaxation: Allow your pup to relax in shaded areas and take indoor breaks throughout the day, especially during peak afternoon temperatures.
• Watch for signs of overheating: Keep an eye out for excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and/or difficulty walking. You can move your pup into the shade immediately if you suspect exhaustion and contact your Veterinarian for additional support.
