As we step into the new year, let’s continue putting our fur babies first by creating a thoughtful plan for success. January happens to be National Train Your Dog Month! This observance serves as a reminder to all pet owners to focus on humane, consistent training to improve behavior and ensure your dog’s well-being. 2026 is the perfect opportunity to begin a training approach tailored to your dog’s unique wants and needs.

Controlling the Consequences and Influencing the Behavior

Dog training is about managing the consequences of your dog’s actions to influence the behaviors they choose to repeat. We know the idea seems simple, but how easy is it to implement? Dog training with treats is the cornerstone of positive reinforcement. And when you want to see a behavior happen more often, reward your pup with a treat. At its core, effective training comes down to either adding something or taking something away. When you give your dog a treat, you’re adding something. When you remove a toy or attention, you’re taking something away. By supporting your dog’s confidence and behavioral development with a carefully curated training regimen, you are creating a stronger, happier, and more well-adjusted companion.

New Year Dog Training Tips for Long-term Success

Training is just one part of a successful new year for your dog. Dogs come trained in loyalty, unconditional love, and friendship. It’s only the easy stuff that they need to learn. The start of 2026 is also the perfect time to focus on:

  • Tasty treats your dog actually likes: Treats should be an exciting reward that your dog is getting for completing a task they’re trying to learn. Therefore, you should be using nice, high-quality treats to deliver this reward. If your dog isn’t responding to a command, it may be because the reward isn’t motivating enough and they’re bored. Try switching it up and offering a flavor they’ll truly enjoy.
  • Keep in mind your dog’s body language: Assessing your dog throughout training and make adjustments, or take a break. You’ll be able to tell the signs of stress or boredom: turning away, whining, pawing, or refusing treats.
  • Deliver their treats immediately: It’s easy to make this mistake when training…delivering your dogs treats too late. Dogs have short attention spans, so waiting four, or five more seconds before giving your dog their treat can create a hurdle; they may have already forgotten why they’re receiving their reward. Strive to give your dog their treat immediately after they’ve acted.
  • Keep training sessions short: Try and avoid having training sessions any longer than ten minutes. Short, focused sessions will help keep your dog engaged and prevent frustration.
  • Make training fun:Training should ultimately be fun for you and your pup! The more training sessions are positive and engaging, your dog will be more motivated to learn.

Challenge yourself to training your dog and even throwing in a new trick, or two for the next four weeks. Your four-legged friend will be happily filled up on tasty treats and you’ll be thankful for the tricks, commands they now know, and their better behavior!
