This month is National Train Your Dog Month, a time to come together and celebrate our furry friends while also sharing tips, training ideas, and information to help our pups be their best selves! So if training for your dog was on the list for New Year’s goals, we will share some of our favorite tips!
1.) Keep your dog busy! When they are bored, trouble is sure to follow. Your dog requires mental and physical stimulation, so make sure to provide plenty of activities for them to enjoy.
2.) It can’t be all business and no play! Teach your pup a new trick to increase their mental stimulation, teach them body awareness, and teach them how to solve problems. We offer monthly trick training they will love, so don’t forget to sign up!
3.) Your pup loves positive reinforcement, so always enjoy their visit. If you want your dog to learn to come to you, make sure you praise them when they do. Be happy and just as excited as they are!
4.) Is your dog doing something great? Be sure to let them know! It’s easy to catch your puppy in a bad moment, but they need praise for the good ones. Be sure to reward and praise their good behaviors; this reward system will encourage this behavior moving forward.
5.) Be consistent. This is probably one of the most important tips we can share with you. For example, if you have a partner or live with family- make sure you are all using the same techniques to train your dog. For instance, if your dog is jumping up on the counter and one person says “no”, another says “get down”, and a third says “get out”, there is no consistency to teach better behavior.
At the end of the day, training takes time and patience, but it is a worthy cause to help your dog develop into a well-trained and happier version of themselves. If you need more resources or support to train your pups, including socialization and learning a trick or two, contact us today!
