Tips for getting your pup ready for training season
As summer winds down and the back-to-school season approaches, it’s the perfect time to help your dog settle back into a consistent routine. Whether your pup is returning to daycare or training classes, or embarking on a new adventure for the very first time, a little preparation can go a long way. From refreshing basic skills to reestablishing daily routines, these simple tips will help set your dog up for a confident and successful start to the season.
A Few Suggestions to Help Your Pup Prepare
- Practice basic commands: Try and spend 10 minutes each day practicing cues like sit, stay, come, leave it, and heel. A quick refresher can build confidence before your pup returns to their training class.
- Re-establish a routine: Start adjusting your pup’s schedules for feeding, going to the bathroom, exercise, and training to match your daily routine. Dogs often thrive on consistency, and getting back on schedule ahead of time can help make the transition smoother.
- Build focus around distraction: Practice training your pup in a variety of environments, such as your yard, a park, or during walks. The goal is to keep your dog engaged even when there are exciting sights and sounds happening all around.
- Make sure they’re getting enough exercise: A dog with pent-up energy may have a harder time focusing, which will in turn make your training more difficult. Try and provide your pup with a walk or play session before daycare or class so they’ll arrive calm and ready to learn.
- Keep training positive: Reward good choices with praise, treats, and play. Positive reinforcement helps your dog look forward to learning. If you keep their training positive, they’ll go into their classes or daycare with a happy, open-mind and will be ready to take direction from their teacher.
- Provide shady areas for relaxation: Allow your pup to relax in shaded areas and take indoor breaks throughout the day, especially during peak afternoon temperatures.
- Be patient: Just like kids heading back to school, dogs may need a little time to readjust. Celebrate small wins with your pup and keep sessions fun and encouraging.
Set your pup up for success this fall by building healthy routines now. Your future training sessions will thank you!
