At The Good Dog Spot, we believe pets are family and it’s important to take care of the WHOLE family. That’s why we’re spreading awareness about Pet Poison Prevention Week (March 17–23, 2024) – a time to learn about the everyday dangers that could harm your furry friends. Accidental poisoning can happen in seconds, but by understanding common pet toxins and taking simple precautions, you can prevent a potential emergency.

Common Hazards for Pets

As we all know, pets are naturally curious, and their explorations can sometimes lead them into trouble. Here are some of the most common culprits, in and around your home, that can be dangerous if ingested:

Human Foods Toxic to Pets

  • Chocolate and Caffeine: Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, and serious heart issues (even small amounts)
  • Grapes and Raisins: Toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure.
  • Onions, Garlic and Chives: Can damage red blood cells, leading to anemia, in both dogs and cats
  • Xylitol (also called Birch Sugar): This can be found in some sugar-free gum, candy, AND even some peanut butter): Can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar, leading to seizures or liver failure.

Other Household and Outdoor Dangers

  • Meds: Human prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, and even pet medications can be toxic if ingested in the wrong amount.
  • Some Plants:  Lilies (for cats), sago palms, oleander, english ivy, azaleas, poinsettias, tulips, and chrysanthemums are just a few examples
  • Cleaning Products: Certain disinfectants, bleach, and antifreeze can be extremely harmful if ingested or inhaled
  • Pesticides and Rodenticides: These poisons are designed to kill pests but can be fatal to pets, even in small amounts

During the spring season, did you know, the most common way dogs and cats ingest cleaning products and pesticides such as lawn fertilizer and anti-freeze, is by walking through the product and then licking their paws? If you use these products make sure to keep your pets from those areas, or at the least, please clean their paws when they come inside.

Signs of Poisoning

There are various signs indicating your pet has ingested something dangerous including, but not limited to vomiting, diarrhea, excessive salivation, breathing difficulties, excitability, loss of consciousness and seizures. Please remember – this is not an exhaustive list and only guidelines.

Prevention: The Best Protection

Significantly reduce the risk of accidental poisoning of your pet with these simple tips:

  • Keep all medications, foods, and chemicals out of reach.
  • Read labels carefully—some pet products contain toxic ingredients.
  • Secure trash cans and keep countertops clear of food.
  • Research pet-safe plants before adding them to your home or garden.

We also recommend taking a PetSaver Class to learn all about how to prevent and ACT if your pet was accidentally exposed or ingested a toxic substance. We offer these throughout the year at The Good Dog Spot, please reach out to inquire about the next one.

Part of our philosophy at The Good Dog Spot is to prioritize your pet’s well-being which means we’re dedicated to helping you create a safe, happy environment for your furry family members. If you have any questions about pet safety, please reach out or stop by our location in Chicopee or Northampton to chat with our team—we’re always happy to help!
